Advances in Understanding Trauma: Translating Neuroscience to Therapy

The Maine Association of Psychiatric Physicians is proud to announce that the esteemed Bessel van der Kolk MD, trauma expert, co-founder of the Trauma Research Foundation (TRF), and best-selling author of The Body Keeps the Score is returning to Maine! He has spent his career studying how children and adults adapt to traumatic experiences and has translated emerging findings from neuroscience and attachment research to develop and study a range of treatments for traumatic stress in children and adults. The focus of the symposium will be on a comprehensive understanding of the neuroscience and impact of psychological trauma and advances in treatment including treatment with psychedelics. Dr. van der Kolk will talk about how exposure to multiple traumas, particularly in childhood, has been proposed to result in a complex of symptoms that includes posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

On Thursday evening, there will be an opportunity for networking, a dinner and a presentation by Elisabeth Fowlie Mock, MD, MPH, FAAF on PMP as a Patient Safety Tool.  When you register, you can select to attend Thursday, Friday or both events.

Dr. Mock received her doctorate from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and a Master of Public Health in Health Policy and Administration from UNC-Chapel Hill.  She also attended Colby College and Emory University. She is Board Certified in Family Medicine and Addiction Medicine.  She works primarily as a consultant and clinical educator with per diem hospitalist shifts.  She worked for several years at a Low Barrier MOUD clinic.  Interests include women’s basketball, chess, Toastmasters and she is a certified basketball referee.  She lives in Bangor, Maine with her husband and 3 doodles now that her 3 young adult kids are launched from the nest.
