The Maine Association of Psychiatric Physicians is a district branch of the American Psychiatric Association and is the only association representing psychiatrists in the State of Maine.

Why Join?

APA

The American Psychiatric Association is our voice in the nation’s capital. We work with our elected representatives, federal agencies, and national groups like NAMI to achieve fair access to quality care for our patients, fair treatment for our profession, and to promote a healthy society.

MAPP

The Maine Association of Psychiatric Physicians  is our voice in local and state mental health systems. We ensure access to essential mental health services. We engage psychiatric residents and faculty in the broader psychiatric community and ensure a proper professional environment for psychiatrists who work in public and private organized systems of care.

Your membership ensures that in a rapidly changing health care environment, you and your profession survive.

Your concurrent membership in the Mane Association of Psychiatric Physicians (MAPP) and the American Psychiatric Association (APA), ensures that your professional interests and those of your patients are represented at the local, state, and national levels.

MAPP Member Benefits

  • Lobbying. MAPP members have a strong voice in the Maine State House and the U.S. Congress with a top-notch lobbying team focusing on legislation to strengthen the practice of psychiatry while protecting the practitioner and patient.
  • Education. Members attend educational programs during the Spring and Fall Conferences at reduced registration fees. Primary care physicians and other clinicians are invited to attend all programs.
  • Communication. Not only do APA members receive a complimentary subscription to The American Journal of Psychiatry, but MAPP members can join the “members only” listserve is an excellent way for members to communicate and collaborate. It has become a great place to share ideas and information with one another instantaneously! MAPP members find the list serve to be an important and useful tool when they have ideas, questions or issues that they need immediate feedback on. Choosing a Career in Psychiatry

Psychiatrists make a difference because they can apply medical knowledge and understanding to the treatment of the mentally ill in a cultural competent manner. There is untold richness in diversity in being a psychiatrist and each year more and more medical students are choosing a career as a psychiatrist.

CME

The Maine Medical Association provides administrative support to MAPP.. As members of the MMA family, all MAPP members have opportunities throughout the year to obtain continuing medical education to maintain an active license through the Osteopathic and Allopathic Boards of Medicine in Maine.

Accreditation through Maine Medical Education Trust assures the medical community and the public that such activities provide physicians with information that can assist them in maintaining or improving their practice of medicine. These activities are free of commercial bias and based on valid content.

Opportunities for Advanced Membership Status

Why become a Distinguished Fellow?

Distinguished Fellowship is awarded to outstanding psychiatrists who have made significant contributions to the psychiatric profession in at least five of the following areas:

  1. Administration
  2. Teaching
  3. Scientific and scholarly publications
  4. Volunteering in mental health and medical activities of social significance
  5. Community involvement
  6. Clinical excellence

Distinguished Fellow is the highest membership honor the APA bestows upon members. Application is by invitation only. Packets are mailed to eligible members each March with the following information:

  • Nomination Form for Distinguished Fellow
  • Distinguished Fellow Criteria/Information and Examples for nominees
  • Recommendation Letter Guidelines and Sample Letters
  • Ethics Questionnaire

How to apply for Fellowship with the APA

Being a Fellow is an honorary designation created by the APA’s Membership Committee and Board of Trustees to recognize career members who have demonstrated allegiance to their profession and commitment to the work of the Association.

Some nomination requirements for Fellowship merit special attention:

  • Successful applicants must be members in good standing with the APA.
  • Curriculum vitae are not acceptable as an alternative to placing information on the application. This information should be included within each numbered section of the nomination form. Do not submit your CV.
  • Certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or the American Osteopathic Association.
  • Applications must be received in the APA office in the Arlington, Va., office no later than September 1 – NO EXCEPTIONS. Applications received after this deadline will not be accepted or considered for review. Please do not send your applications to the APPA office in Montgomery.
