Portland Psychiatrist Earns National Recognition for WMPG’s Safe Space Radio

PORTLAND — Psychiatrist Dr. Anne Hallward has been named the 2016 recipient of the American Women in Psychiatry’s Jeanne M. Spurlock Social Justice Award. The national award recognizes the outstanding work of one psychiatrist on behalf of marginalized people to tell their stories, improve their lives and advocate for their health and human rights. It memorializes the life and work of physician, educator and writer Jeanne M. Spurlock, who dedicated her career to the issues facing marginalized communities such as poverty, racism and sexism.

Hallward received the award in recognition for her work creating Safe Space Radio, a radio program and podcast that offers a respectful forum for courageous conversations about difficult subjects. She received the award on May 17 at the American Psychiatric Association’s Women national meeting in Atlanta.
