You may ask yourself, why should you join the American Psychiatric Association and the Maine Association of Psychiatric Physicians? Renewing means you will continue to have access to a myriad of benefits exclusive to the APA and MAPP. MAPP is a District Branch of the APA with dual membership. Here are a just few reasons why you should become one of us.
Advocacy. MAPP is proud of its ability to ensure psychiatrists have a voice in legislative and advocacy matters. Because of your financial support, we can advocate for our members and actively monitor legislation, policy meetings, and stakeholder committees and coalitions to make sure you are represented, and your patients are taken care of. In 2023 MAPP introduced, and the governor signed into law, An Act to Strengthen Maine’s Health Care Workforce by Preventing Discrimination by Requiring Maintenance of Certification for Insurance Reimbursement. Membership means joining more than 37,000 members who are involved in psychiatric practice, research, and academia, representing a diverse population of patients in more than 100 countries.
Education: MAPP offers high-quality educational opportunities through lectures, conferences, and journal clubs. A few of the recent themes included: New Perspectives: 1) From Eating Disorders to Nutritional Health, 2) Microdosing in Psychiatry; Sleep, Health & Cognition: A Lifecycle Perspective; 3) Sexual Health in Psychiatric & Medical Practice, 4) Psychopharmacology: An Update and a Look Ahead.
Leadership: MAPP members have numerous opportunities for leadership roles within the association. We encourage members to be involved and to consider committee participation at some point. There are several committees that include: Legislative Committee, Program Committee, Ethics, Membership and more. Participation on these committees provides an opportunity to network with other psychiatrists on issues of special interest.
Website & social media: MAPP’s website can be found at www.mainepsych.org. The website has become a useful tool for event information, resources, legislative testimony, and resource information. MAPP also has Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn accounts.
Networking: MAPP members are a great resource for professional networking. There is no better way to connect with peers than through professional association membership. Get connected through our various Listservs, MAPP Committees, General Membership Meetings, CME events, and Journal Clubs. Networking with professionals outside your place of employment can give you a broader perspective on the market and healthcare in general. Twice a year MAPP hosts a social event for psychiatry residents and fellows.
Membership in professional organizations is a way for professionals with similar objectives to join together to have the voice of many, versus the voice of one. Joining an organization can lead to personal growth, enhanced professional prospective, and knowledge development, and support for creating change.
