A First-in-the-Nation Program

Hanley’s Physician Executive Leadership Institute (PELI) is a first-in-the-nation program that develops physician and provider leaders through intensive, national-caliber professional development coursework. Courses are available for individuals and through organizations that purchase a PELI course.
PELI is divided into two courses: Foundational and Advanced. The Foundational Course is aimed at physicians and other health professionals who are beginning to take on roles that require management and leadership skills, while the Advanced Course provides a higher level of personal and professional development.
Both the Foundational and Advanced Courses focus on the following set of core competencies:

Systems Awareness

Systems awareness is founded on community concern, sustainable productivity, and systems thinking. It recognizes that the physician’s practice, the healthcare delivery network, and the local and statewide community welfare comprise an interrelated system in which decisions made at one level affect all other levels. This core competency will teach the physician leader how to:

  • influence these decisions to improve productivity and community welfare
  • think and act from a whole system perspective
  • make decisions in light of the long-term health of the whole system.

Strategic Focus

Strategic focus measures the creative use of power, effective decision-making, and the ability to influence systems and policies. Strategic focus will develop the physician leader to be purposeful, visionary, goal-directed so that he or she may develop a track record of goal achievement, execution, and high performance.

Key Management/Business Skills

The area of Key Management/Business Skills will teach the physician leader to understand financial statements and what they say about an organization, how to use financial ratios, and prepare an effective budget. This competency will also focus on:

  • IT tools and their use in health care organizations
  • performance management tools
  • the importance of having effective and productive conversations with employees/direct reports
  • the basics of reimbursement – Medicare/Medicaid
  • allocation of expenses.

Self-Awareness

The Self-Awareness competency focuses on ongoing professional and personal development that is expressed through high integrity leadership. This competency will focus on:

  • the ability to take tough stands
  • bring up the “un-discussables” (risky issues the group avoids discussing)
  • openly deal with relationship problems
  • share personal feelings/vulnerabilities about a situation

Health Care Trends

The Health Care Trend competency teaches the emerging models of health care especially as they relate to physician-hospital relationships. It will also teach:

  • evolving trends in health care delivery and payment e.g., patient centered medical home (PCMH), accountable care organizations (ACO)
  • the role of physician leaders in emerging models of care
  • the links between clinical care, public health, and health policy.

Team Work and Collaboration

The Team Work and Collaboration competency will teach the physician leader how to foster high-performance teamwork among team members under their supervision, across the organization, and within teams in which they participate. It will also teach:
